AIA Newark & Suburban Architects Supports NJIT Student-Led Design-Build Project at Robert Treat Academy

AIA Newark & Suburban Architects is supporting a student-led design-build initiative by AIAS NJIT Freedom by Design, bringing hands-on, community-focused architecture into a real-world educational setting.

Students are currently designing and constructing a series of painted, stackable seating modules for Robert Treat Academy Charter School. The project moves from concept through fabrication, offering participants direct experience in translating design ideas into built work that serves a local school community.

Financial contributions from AIA Newark & Suburban Architects have helped fund materials for the initiative. The team is producing a total of 14 seating modules, with the first six scheduled for delivery later this month and the remainder to follow.

The project reflects a broader commitment to supporting emerging professionals and expanding the role of architects in community-based work. By engaging students in applied design and construction, the initiative highlights the impact of architecture beyond the studio and into everyday learning environments.
