Margaret M. Hickey, AIA, is the Principal Historic Preservation Specialist for the architecture firm Connolly & Hickey Historical Architects located in Cranford, New Jersey. Margaret holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the New Jersey Institute of Technology and a Master of Science in Historic Preservation from Columbia University. She has been a principal at Connolly & Hickey since 2003, in charge of ensuring all work performed by the firm complies with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.

Margaret will present an overview of the historic preservation work the firm undertakes highlighting sample projects that presented particularly complicated conditions. This will include the planning process for historic projects that begins with preparation of a Historic Preservation Plan or Historic Structure Report, the recommendations from which translate into design and contract documents. Margaret will discuss the typical review process; the different approvals required, including working with the New Jersey Historic Preservation Office; and ensuring projects are in compliance with the Secretary of the Interiors Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. Margaret will also discuss the various grant programs that are available for bricks and mortar funding for historic properties owned and operated by non-profits and municipal, county and state entities. Projects to be highlighted include the Ford-Faesch House in Rockaway Township, Drumthwacket in Princeton, Atsion Mansion in Wharton State Forest, the Lake Hopatcong Train Station in Roxbury, the Grover Cleveland Birthplace in Caldwell, the Metlar-Bodine House in Piscataway, and multiple resources from the Morris Canal.
