Wood: The natural material with the greatest realm of personalities.

The architect Charles Gwathmey frequently employed exotic and special woods to deliver warmth to his cool, interior architectural forms.   Through careful selection of furniture, and skillful use of woods, he created rich and incomparable interiors in his residential projects.  Explore the world of choices available in veneer and solid wood slabs and lumber with a master craftsman who worked directly with Gwathmey to achieve his goals.

Participants who complete the course will receive 2 Learning Units

Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the incredibly wide variety of wood species, grain patterns, and the processes that yield these patterns. Explore the largest collection of exotic and domestic wood species in the world with over 100 species, in the form of veneer, solid wood lumber, and natural edge slabs.  View 1 million sq. ft. of veneer and hundreds of thousands of board feet of solid wood in the dramatic Wood Theater, designed to enrich the clients’ appreciation of this material.  During the tour, participants will be introduced to the incredibly different grain patterns that are available within a single species.

Outside there will be a live demonstration of chainsaw milling of 4 to 5 foot diameter local trees into live edge slabs, both longitudinal, and cross sectional. This milling process will provide a unique view into how the first cut into a tree is calculated and how that decision will affect the entire yield of a tree, as well as the personalities of each slab.  Parts of the 500-year-old Basking Ridge White Oak tree will also be milled.  This tree played host to a meeting between General George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette in May of 1780.

The exterior portion of the program will be accompanied by a genuine open-fire simmered Hungarian goulash and Missouri hickory-smoked ribs.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discover different species, and unique grain patterns in both solid wood and veneer.
  • Understand the possibilities of custom sawing, and the unique decisions that are made by the sawyer during the moment of milling a solid tree trunk into slabs and lumber.
  • Learn to specify how special grain characteristics will be utilized on your projects.
  • Understand the art of visually balancing veneer panels for a variety of uses including paneling and table tops.
  • Learn about proper drying and preservation techniques for solid wood lumber and slabs.
  • Discuss how to specify appropriate materials for different types of interior furnishings.
  • Understand a new level of control that is available to designers and architects when specifying wood furniture.
