“The AIA is a visionary member organization providing advocacy, leadership, and resources for architects to design a better world.”

AIA members create enduring value. We benefit clients and communities through innovative design solutions.

AIA members drive positive change. We work collaboratively and creatively to transform clients’ goals into reality.

AIA members lead with vision. We meet the ever-changing challenges of the designed environment.

AIA members shape the future. We value talent and diversity in new generations of professionals.

Repositioning

The American Institute of Architects is the voice of our profession, with over 150 years of dedication towards “promoting the scientific and practical perfection of its members, and elevating the standing of the profession” In 2012 the AIA introduced the AIA Repositioning, an initiative representing the most extensive research and strategic assessment of the organization ever conducted. Through interviews and discussions the initiative sought input from not only AIA member and non-member Architects, but also students and faculties, clients and the general public. The AIA Repositioning initiative is the Institute’s proactive shift in perspective, an honest questioning of just what the purpose of the AIA is today and what it should be moving into an uncertain future.

Below are the 10 areas identified as needing organizational reassessment in there discussion about repositioning. Further explanation of each category is below the poll or in this PDF.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

CONNECT:

Component autonomy versus unity. While a necessity, component autonomy leads to inconsistency in how members experience and value AIA through the local component.

Component structure. The component structure is unwieldy and challenging for even seasoned members to comprehend.

Lack of tier coordination. Many members and staff noted a lack of cohesion among the local, state, and national levels of AIA and are unclear about the distinct function and responsibilities of each tier.

ENGAGE:

Engaging emerging professionals. AIA seeks to be an essential resource for all architects, at every stage of their career, but the organization has yet to successfully embrace the values and interests of emerging architects.

Inefficacy of communications. Bombarded with communications, members “tune out” AIA. At the same time, most are unaware of the full scope of AIA offerings that benefit them and many have difficulty finding the information they seek.

INNOVATE:

Prioritization of initiatives. Given that the AIA cannot be all things to all people, the organization must decide the programs and services most essential to the majority of members so that resources can be allocated effectively and members receive the greatest value.

Passive reactiveness. Members and staff feel that AIA is often slow to take a stand on important issues that define and impact the architecture profession.

Resource allocation. Financial and other organizational resources are seen as disproportionately benefitting national at the expense of local and regional components.

LEAD:

Leadership tenure and agendas. The one year terms and changing agendas of elected leadership contribute to a lack of continuity and impact in identifying and acting upon organization priorities.

Board size and composition. The national AIA Board, with nearly 60 members, is large for an organization of AIA’s size. Similarly, your State or Local AIA Board may also be too large. However, the greatest concern is whether AIA Boards’ composition are truly representative of the range and diversity of membership.

On February 14, 2013, AIANJ and NJIT Career Development Services, with the help of Jane Gaertner, hosted the IDP and A.R.E. Seminar at NJIT. On this Valentine’s Day, several involved and concerned groups came together to ignite the passion of profession of architecture by educating, and creating a drive for our emerging professionals as they embark on their road to licensure.

The event was well attended by students, post-graduates and architects. The moderator for the evening, Ashton Quintin Jr., Associate AIA, the AIANJ IDP Coordinator, started by introducing the panelists for the evening. They were Jerry L. Eben, AIA, the Regional Director for AIANJ; Michael Soriano, AIA, the President of the State Board of Architects; Michael J. Armstrong, AIA, CEO of NCARB and Robert Ivy, FAIA, CEO/ EVP for AIA. Guest speakers included Joseph Abello from the NJ State Board of Architects and Martin Smith, AIA, Manager for the Intern Development Program. The event was a joint effort among NJIT CoAD AIAS Chapter, AIA Newark and Suburban Architects and AIANJ.

The panel provided keen professional advice to numerous questions, while inserting their own experiences into the discussions, making the event feel more personal to the audience. Mr. Armstrong stated that as students graduate they will find a field of acronyms B.Arch, NCARB, A.R.E., LEED, AIA, USGBC, PP, CSI, etc..He explained that each acronym has a meaning with which the student will become familiar in regard to specific standards and requirements of becoming a registered architect.

The event specifically focused on the IDP and A.R.E. requirements as many of the attendees were just beginning the process in their careers. Mr. Smith began by discussing when a student can pen a NCARB record and begin recording their experience’. He discussed the different work settings in which candidates can gain experience and how many hours must be acquired. Smith then moved into reviewing the seven divisions of the A.R.E. and also gave a quick overview of the 5-year rolling clock. He mentioned the fact that the A.R.E. tests will undergo a blackout starting July 1, 2013. During that period no tests will be administered, but anyone already in the testing process will receive a 12-week extension to their 5-year rolling clock time.

Martin’s main message was to start early and formulate a plan that works for you. For more information please visit ncarb.org/.

Mr. Abello’s presentation gave an overview of the prerequisites for an architect’s license in the state of New Jersey, the required components of the 3 E’s: Education, Experience and Exam. The education third requires the person to receive a professional degree from a NAAB-accredited program. The experience portion entails completion of the IDP process, and of course the successful completion of the A.R.E. exam.

Abello also reviewed application for licensure and the associated fees, which are currently $160 for a 2-year period. He also discussed the need to complete continuing education courses as part of licensure.

For more information please visit www.njconsumeraffairs.gov/arch/

As the Regional Associate Director for NJ, Jason Peist, Assoc. AIA reiterated the importance of AIA to those who may not know its purpose or value. For emerging professionals, AIA is not only an obvious choice for those seeking work, but also those who are seeking insight, importance and mentorship. IDP provides preliminary guidelines for those seeking to become architects, but AIA provides continuing knowledge to become a leader in the profession.

Mr. Ivy spoke of his route to licensure and where it had brought him over his long career. He introduced Mickey Jacob, FAIA, the President of AIA who had come to town with him, and who planned to travel with Mr. Eben on the following day to tour Super Storm Sandy ravaged areas of the New Jersey Shore.
