President’s Update 2018 Q’2

AIA Newark & Suburban Members:

It is hard to believe but the publication of this AIA Newark & Suburban Architects Members Update coincides with the midpoint of my 2018 presidency. The first half of the year has gone fast, but with the help of the Board of Trustees, Committee Members, and our Administrator, Julie Pagnotta, we have held a number of well-attended events.

My adrenaline is still running high from having attended last week’s A’18 Conference on Architecture across the river in New York City, where a record 26,000-plus architects and designers took part in this years national convention. The theme of this year’s Conference on Architecture was “Blueprint for Better Cities.” In addition to the two Keynote Plenary Sessions held at Radio City Music Hall, the many design-focused tours of New York City were the highlight of this year’s conference.

AIA National CEO, Robert Ivy, FAIA, reported that despite an array of challenges the Institute is strong, with membership at an all time high of 92,000. Closer to home, our AIA Newark & Suburban Architects membership hovers above 580, and we remain the largest component of the six AIA New Jersey sections.

I have committed my year as President to carrying on the tradition of “stewardship” of our organization, and reinforcing our commitment to AIA “Values” & “Core Member Services.” Among my core focus areas are advocacy, public awareness, education, and above all, fellowship and dialogue between members within our association of architects.

Our AIANS calendar is light over the summer months to allow members family and vacation time, but before we break we are co-sponsoring a fun and informative Miele Summer CES program on July 10, 2018 at the award-winning Miele Headquarters in Princeton, NJ. The program includes a live chef demonstration, product showroom tour, and an AIA CES 1.0 HSW LU continuing education course. Register on our AIANS website here: http://aians.org/meetinginfo.php?id=55&ts=1529367424

Our fall calendar will ramp back up again after Labor Day including the following programs.

  • Fall Building Tour #2 – September 8, 2018
  • Design Awards (General Meeting #4) – September 13, 2018
  • Roundtable Panel (General Meeting #5) – October 11, 2018
  • Canstruction - October 26,2018
  • Plus more...

Enjoy your summer!
